Layla Sae, the energetic, abrasive and athletic loose forward, has been on the radar of Black Ferns selectors for sometime.

Following respective standout seasons during Sky Super Rugby Aupiki and Bunnings Warehouse Farah Palmer Cup for the Hurricanes Poua and Manawatū Cyclones, Sae was named in the 2023 Black Ferns end of year tour squad.

Sae, who has type 1 diabetes, an ailment from which she’s suffered since she was 4, debuted for the Black Ferns off the bench in front of whanau and fans against Australia, for the O’Reilly Cup, presented by Ryman Healthcare.

Sae went on to be a consistent performer during the Black Ferns WXV campaign.
